Meditation

Meditation is the act of focusing your attention on one thing at a time, helping you to stay in the present moment and develop complete awareness of any task, thought, emotion, object or sound.

In Meditation you are relaxed but focused and aware of what you are doing right now. There are different methods such as breath control or candle gazing, however you can also be walking or listening to music and still be meditating. Whenever you act with awareness you are also meditating.

Meditation helps to slow down the breath, allowing you to feel calm, it reduces stress and anxiety and brings peace of mind.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness just means paying attention or awareness, although it’s more than just being aware, it’s about being kind to yourself.

Instead of making judgments about how you are feeling or what you are thinking, perhaps telling yourself you shouldn’t feel this way or be like this, you just notice any sensations, emotions, thoughts, aches or pains and accept them just as they are. You don’t try to change anything, avoid things or hold on to anything, you just become aware with kindness, knowing that whatever arises it’s all ok. This allows you to relax, be at ease with yourself and take time to slow down and enjoy being in this moment just as you are right now.

This awareness and kindness is what makes mindful meditation different to other types of meditation. For example with a meditation that includes visualisation, you are taken on a journey, where you become less aware of yourself and drift off in a dream like state to other places. This is a fabulous way to relax and be in a different space to our every day stressful lives, but the effects are temporary, they last during the meditation, but we still step back into our lives and everything carries on as normal.

With mindfulness we can bring our meditation practice into our daily lives with us, being aware of our daily activities, such as brushing our teeth, washing up or having a cup of tea. We can build it into our work day by taking a few minutes to become aware of our breathing, giving us that much needed time and space, helping us deal with our stressful day.

During a Zen Meditation and Mindfulness 8-week course you will learn about stress, physical and emotional pain along with traditional Zen meditation and mindfulness practices that help you to improve your wellbeing and develop a deeper understanding of yourself.

The courses available use centuries old Zen Buddhist practices, which are proven to work, not only by the length of time these practices have been around but by Oxford University, who are doing a study into the “Influence of Mindfulness and Meditation on overall life satisfaction.”

There are two kinds of 8-week courses you can try:

Zen Meditation and Mindfulness for Wellbeing

This course takes a looks at stress, pain and anxiety along with traditional Zen meditations to help improve your whole wellbeing. You will discover more about mindfulness and how to approach your life with kindness and awareness, bringing these practices into your daily life.

Zen Meditation and Mindfulness for Insight

This course allows you to create or deepen your practice, learn more about Zen, energy and grounding. We will look at the stages of insight and moving meditations, so that we can take our practice into our everyday life. The meditations allow you to journey inwards to discover your true nature and gain personal insights allowing you to feel happier within yourself.
